Assembling the Engine Block Part VI

The Left Headers
Stage 18.1

The Header Flange Connection for Left Bank has a small pin on it. We will be attaching the headers to the opposite side from this pin.

Secure the Header for Cylinder 7 to the Header Flange hole farthest from the pin as shown, with one (1) AP screw.

Then, secure the Header for Cylinder 5 to the Header Flange hole next to the previous one, with one (1) AP screw:

Stage 18.2

Secure the Header for Cylinder 3 to the Header Flange hole next to the previous one, with one (1) AP screw.

Then, secure the Header for Cylinder 1 to the Header Flange hole next to the previous one, with one (1) AP screw.

The free ends of the Headers should all be close together and facing the same way:

Stage 18.3

Secure the Left Bank Exhaust Pipe to the Header Connection as shown, with one (1) AP screw:

Stage 18.4

Insert the pins of the Headers into the matching holes of the Header Connection, as shown:

Stage 18.5

Retrieve the Engine Block assembly from the previous stage. Fit the pin of the Header Flange to the matching hole on the left side of the Engine Block assembly and secure the Header Flange into place with one (1) CM screw into the center hole.

We found this is easier to attach when the engine is upside down. This is also your friendly reminder to try using 3-in-One Oil on all screws going into metal:

Stage 18.6

Finish attaching the Header Flange with two (2) more CM screws:

Thoughts

MOM: We found lining up the headers to fit properly into the header connection and the placing of each connection on the header flange can make you question your sanity! Our first attempt at the alignment of the headers looked way off! We double and triple checked to be sure we affixed the correct headers in the proper order and we had! After a minute or so, we found we had to rotate and/or position the headers just right to have them line up with the holes on the header connection. Check in to the loony bin – averted! Phew!
