STAGE 19

 Return to the BUILD

“In this assembly session, we will show you how to mount the headers on the right side of the engine, those corresponding to cylinders 2, 4, 6, and 8.”

This is a mirror of the steps from the previous stage, just on the other side of the engine. We made a couple of mistakes here, but you should be able to sort it out as we have done this before.

Parts

Materials: Same as last stage, the only metal part is the Header Flange – all other parts are plastic.

Assembling the Engine Block Part VII

The Right Headers
Stage 19.1

The Header Flange Connection for Right Bank has a small pin on it. We will be attaching the headers to the opposite side from this pin.

Secure the Header for Cylinder 8 to the Header Flange hole farthest from the pin as shown, with one (1) AP screw.

Then, secure the Header for Cylinder 6 to the Header Flange hole next to the previous one, with one (1) AP screw.

This photo is wrong, we accidentally connected the wrong parts. See the final header assembly below for the correct placement:

MOM: This mistake was even after I looked at the instructions 3 or 4 times just to be sure I had them lined up correctly…Oops!  Good thing we have opportunities to correct mistakes.

Stage 19.2

Secure the Header for Cylinder 4 to the Header Flange hole next to the previous one, with one (1) AP screw.

Then, secure the Header for Cylinder 2 to the Header Flange hole next to the previous one, with one (1) AP screw.

This photo is also wrong, we accidentally connected the wrong parts. See the final header assembly below for the correct placement:

The free ends of the Headers should all be close together and facing the same way.

These parts are connected correctly (with the Header Connection from the next step already in place). Use this for reference:

Stage 19.3

Secure the Right Bank Exhaust Pipe to the Header Connection as shown, with one (1) AP screw:

Stage 19.4

Insert the pins of the Headers into the matching holes of the Header Connection, as shown:

Stage 19.5

Retrieve the Engine Block assembly from the previous stage. Fit the pin of the Header Flange to the matching hole on the right side of the Engine Block assembly and secure the Header Flange into place with three (1) CM screws.

This is your friendly reminder to try using 3-in-One Oil on all screws going into metal:

We temporarily placed the Air Intake on the engine just to take this fun picture of the completed engine before it is added to the chassis. Looking good!

Mounting the Engine
Stage 19.6

Retrieve the Front Chassis assembly we completed in Stage 11.  Place the Engine Block assembly onto the Front Chassis, aligning the four holes of the Engine Mounts and making sure the post of the Gearbox sits down into the round recess at the rear of the chassis:

Stage 19.7

Secure the front Engine Mounts to the Front Chassis with two (2) AM screws, as shown:

Stage 19.8

Secure the rear Engine Mounts to the Front Chassis with two (2) AM screws, as shown:

Stage 19.9

Turn the Front Chassis over. Secure the post of the Gearbox to the Front Chassis with one (1) AM screw:

Thoughts

MOM: It was a learning experience with this stage, even after reading the instructions and looking at the parts to be sure I had them in the right order, I still didn’t. Perhaps it was the excitement of knowing by the end of this stage we would be attaching this lovely piece of machinery to the chassis that I lost focus for a minute or two.
